How is Petrol Price Decided in Pakistan?

Petrol & Diesel

OGRA (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority) sets petrol and diesel prices every 1st and 15th of the month. The price is calculated based on international crude oil prices (Arab Light), the USD/PKR exchange rate, taxes, including the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL), and dealer/distributor margins. The government typically announces new prices around midnight on the 1st and 15th.

CNG & LPG

CNG pricing is set by provincial governments and varies by region. Region 1 (Punjab & KPK) has different rates than Region 2 (Sindh & Balochistan). LPG prices follow international propane/butane rates and are controlled separately by OGRA. The final pump price always includes OGRA margin, distribution costs, and dealer commission.

Tips to Save on Fuel in Pakistan

🔄

Compare Before You Fill

Use our city filter to find the cheapest pump near you. Price differences between stations in the same city can be PKR 3–8 per liter.

📅

Fill Before the 1st and 15th

OGRA announces price changes on these dates. If a price hike is expected, fill your tank just before midnight.

🛞

Maintain Tyre Pressure

Properly inflated tyres improve fuel efficiency by up to 3%. Check your tyre pressure weekly.

🌙

Fill at Night or Early Morning

Fuel is denser at lower temperatures. Filling at night or early morning gives you slightly more fuel per liter.

Fuel Types Available in Pakistan

Petrol RON 92

Most commonly used fuel in Pakistan. Suitable for motorcycles, small cars, and most 1000cc–1300cc vehicles. Default fuel at most pumps.

Petrol RON 95

Higher octane fuel for modern engines. Used in 1500cc+ vehicles, imported cars, and performance vehicles. Not available at all pumps.

High Speed Diesel (HSD)

Used in trucks, buses, tractors, SUVs (Prado, Land Cruiser), and generators. Most widely consumed fuel by volume in Pakistan.

CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)

Very popular in Pakistan due to lower cost. Used in rickshaws, taxis, and converted private cars. CNG stations have different operating hours and may be closed some days due to government load management.

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)

Used in cooking and increasingly in vehicles as an alternative to CNG. Available in cylinders and auto-LPG dispensers.

How We Source & Verify These Prices

Where the data comes from

Every rate on this page is taken from the official OGRA (Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority) fortnightly notification and cross-checked against the public price boards of PSO and Shell Pakistan. We do not estimate or predict prices — we publish the notified figure once it is confirmed by at least two of these sources.

How often it is updated

OGRA revises fuel prices on the 1st and 15th of each month (24 times a year), with occasional mid-cycle revisions. Each page is updated by hand within hours of the notification. The "Rates effective" date at the top of this page always shows the exact notification we are reporting.

Who maintains it

PetrolRate.pk is maintained by an independent editorial team based in Pakistan that has tracked OGRA fuel notifications since 2024. We are not affiliated with OGRA, any oil marketing company, or any petrol pump. The site is reader-funded and carries no paid price placements.

Accuracy & corrections

City-level pump prices can vary by a few rupees due to the Inland Freight Equalisation Margin and dealer commission, so treat these as reference rates and confirm at the pump. Spotted an error? Tell us and we will correct it, with the change reflected in the "Updated" date.
